A ruby is a pink to blood-red colored gem stone. It was regarded by ancient Hindus to be the "KING of the gems" and was believed to protect wearers from evil. Today the deep, red color of a ruby signifies LOVE and PASSION. The ruby is the traditional birthstone for July and can be differentiated from a garnet by color-- it is always a lighter red, more pink gemstone. The ruby is considered to be one of the four precious stones-- the sapphire, emerald and diamond are also amongst this precious gemstone group. The darker- or more "blood-red" a ruby is signifies a higher value. These dark, bright rubies command a higher premium than those of a lighter red or pink tone.
