Pearls are unique as they are the only gems that come from living sea creatures and require no faceting or polishing to reveal their natural beauty. Pearls can be considered true natural beauties. Pearls have been given as tokens of adornment for centuries and in Greek mythology the Greeks believed that pearls were the hardened tears of joy from Aphrodite, the goddess of love. Pearls were also a favorite gem of the Roman Empire and even in Tudor England the 1500s were know as the pearl age. Pearls began to be cultivated in the early 1900s and since have almost replaced natural pearls.
Pearls are revered as symbol of purity. They are often given to commemorate an event such as a birth or marriage. They are suitable for all ages and can be worn (elegantly) with everything from jeans to evening wear.
