Ullapool Scotland is our destination today! From the
whitewashed cottages along the harbor to the special views of the
loch and its flanking hills, Ullapool has a very distinctive
appeal. It's port #7 on the
Emerald Isles cruise on Viking Sky.
Ullapool Scotland
What a treasure of a village! With around 1500 inhabitants,
this hidden gem in the Scottish Highlands is the largest
settlement for many miles around, an important port and a sweet
tourist destination.
The North Atlantic Drift passes Ullapool, moderating the
temperature. A few New Zealand cabbage trees are grown in the
town and are often mistaken for palms. Founded in 1788, the port,
which is at the edge of town, was originally intended for use as
a herring port. A recent visitor describes it by saying “Ullapool
looks like a drawing from a 50's children’s book, lovely.”
Hub for Music and Arts
Ullapool has a strong reputation as a center for music, the
arts and performance. The village has a small museum housed
in a Telford Church, An
Talla Solais, an arts center with frequently changing
exhibitions and workshops, and several pubs and restaurants. It
is a center for walkers and wildlife enthusiasts situated in a
spectacular and remote part of the United Kingdom.
There is a great choice of varied walks in the area including
mountains, rocky coasts and long inland footpaths with a good
portion of the finest summits in the north west Highlands too. An
Teallach is a massive mountain which dominates the area and
consists of Torridonian sandstone, which is layered nearly
horizontally. It is an easy climb but is several miles from the
nearest road, so a long trek is needed before the climb begins.
The walker will be rewarded with the breathtaking views of the
surroundings, especially to the sea and the islands to the west,
but also to the south, and the desolate Whitbread wilderness.
To the west of Ullapool is the
Inverpolly National Nature Reserve, home to pine martens,
wildcats, buzzards and golden eagles as well as the unique shape
of Stac Pollaidh, one of the most photographed hills in the
area.
South from Ullapool are attractions such as Leckmelm Shrubbery
and Arboretum, Lael Forest Garden, and the dizzying depths of
Corrieshalloch Gorge and the Falls of Measach. Along the Road to
Poolewe are great views out to sea over golden beaches and green,
rocky islands, and famous Inverewe Garden overlooking Loch
Ewe.
Ullapool Scotland offers a row of whitewashed cottages arrayed
along the harbor and special views of the loch and its flanking
hills, the town has a very distinctive appeal. The harbor served
as an emigration point during the Clearances, with thousands of
Scots watching Ullapool recede behind as they began a journey to
a new continent. Within the village, there are several shops and
boutiques, cafes and pubs. The people of Ullapool are welcome and
friendly. The shops offer a variety of local, hand-made items
such as pottery and soaps.
For those wanting to know more about the area the excellent
Ullapool Museum &
Visitor Centre on West Argyle Street can be highly
recommended. Within this old parish church you can learn the
story of the people of Loch Broom and the history of
Ullapool.
Enjoy the beauty of this port village. If you're
cruising on Viking Sky with me come and share what cool places
you found today!
Hasta la bye bye!
