BOOTY-FUL TREASURE FROM THE Q CREW

Avast ye landlubbers! In honor of International Talk Like a Pirate Day (September 19th) we’d like to share our thoughts on TREASURE! Otherwise known in pirate lingo as “booty”.

Whose Booty? Pirate's Booty

Just how did the term “booty” come to be used to describe the contents of a pirate’s chest (not simply a reference to his…or her…backside)? Here’s a plausible story according to Yahoo Answers:

The word came from an ancient form of English, the word "bute" pronounced, "boo-tee." It meant "exchange" as in a financial exchange (i.e. money for property).

The pirates used it in a kind of ironic way, the same way they called themselves "gentlemen of fortune" when they did not act like gentlemen at all. In this case, the joke was that they had "exchanged" the right to stay alive for the victim's money. Pretending that what they did was an "exchange" rather than robbery gave them a laugh.

Shake Your Booty

Do Pirate’s shake their booties? We really don’t know, but you are welcome to shake yours with (or for) the ones you love in honor of Talk Like a Pirate Day. Might we suggest The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem’s “Drunken Sailor,” so you can shake your booty as you belt out “hoo-ray, up she rises, early in the morning!” And, there’s always the theme song to “Pirates of the Caribbean.”
