Something old, something new, something borrowed, something…Q?

If you’ve had anything to do with a wedding in the past couple of centuries you’ve probably heard the following rhyme:
Something old,
Something new,
Something borrowed,
Something blue,
And a sixpence in her shoe.
Why Go Traditional?
As with most wedding traditions, this Old English rhyme is all about bringing good luck, prosperity, and joy into the lives of the newly joined couple. These traditions – some may call them superstitions – are to ensure a long and happy marriage.
Something Old
Something old is meant to ward off the Evil Eye (which is thought to lead to fertility problems) and protect future children born to the couple. For those more interested in raising fur children or who are planning to remain a party of two, you’ll be happy to know that something old can also be representative of continued happiness and protection of the relationship. “Something old” is your connection of past joy and security to the present and future.
Something New
Something new is usually pretty easy. New shoes, new earrings, new partner. Whatever you choose, this represents optimism for a bright future. Simple, yes? (So get shopping!)
Something Borrowed
Something borrowed is typically a token from another happy bride…your best friend, sister, mom, etc. In theory, the happiness and success of this other special relationship will rub off on you and yours. (So, choose wisely!)
Something Blue
Something blue…true blue, if you will. Blue is the color of fidelity, purity, and love. This is a wish for continued blue skies and smooth sailing throughout your life together. And any shade will do! Whether you prefer an inky tone reminiscent of starry night skies or the palest hint of pastel aquamarine, it all represents the same meaning.
The Victorian Twist
The sixpence was added in the Victorian era as a symbol of prosperity or to ward against evil done by frustrated suitors…no one wants any objections on their big day! If you think that could be a problem, perhaps in addition to the sixpence you could add a blue clad security detail to bounce any troublemakers.
Your Twist on Tradition
Perhaps following tradition means you’ll wear your grandmother’s veil or your mother’s pearls. Perhaps you’ll choose a dress or jewelry with a design based on historical fashion or artwork. Each bride is unique and should allow her personal creativity to guide these selections. Above all, choose accessories that make you feel beautiful! At the end of the day all that really matters is setting yourself up for your personal happily ever after.
