Opal Jewelry

Opals are easily recognized by their iridescent, confetti-like flecks called play-of-color. Opals with this colorful characteristic are classified as precious. Common opals are solid stones in pretty pastels.

Opal birthstone: October (along with tourmaline jewelry)

Types of Opals

  • Harlequin opal is the most desirable. It is translucent with an extremely colorful checkerboard pattern.
  • Jelly opal is bluish-grey with bits of rainbow.
  • Boulder opal contains pieces of opal lodged throughout a black or brown stone.
  • Fire opal is orange with tinges of yellow and red with faint play-of-color.
  • Black opal is uncommon and resembles a galaxy within a dark stone.
  • White opal is the most common precious opal but beautiful, like rainbow prisms reflecting onto fresh snow.
  • Red opal is the rarest of them all, especially when combined with black.

Some of our favorite opal jewelry pieces in this collection include: the 14k Gold Asymmetrical Opal and Pearl Earrings, and the 14k Gold Asymmetrical Opal, Tanzanite, and Multi-Stone Earrings.

Opals are soft gems with a Mohs hardness score of 5.5. To prolong your opal’s lifespan and keep its vibrant color, wipe it with a warm, soapy rag, but do not place it in the water.
